The Nigeria Football Federation has welcomed Arthur Okonkwo after FIFA approved his change of international allegiance from England to Nigeria, clearing the 24 year old goalkeeper to represent the Super Eagles.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo featured for England at various youth levels between 2015 and 2018 before deciding to switch his international loyalties.
FIFA’s clearance, given in December, removes any administrative barriers to his selection for upcoming fixtures.
Dr Ademola Olajire, the NFF director of communications, described Okonkwo’s decision as a welcome addition to the national setup.
He said the federation is pleased to secure another talented player committed to Nigeria and noted that Okonkwo offers the technical team an extra option in goal.
Okonkwo arrives at a moment when the national side seeks to balance immediate experience with longer term prospects in the goal keeping department.
His background in English league football is expected to provide competition and depth as coaches finalise squad plans for future tournaments.
