Nigerian-American mathematician joins California 2026 governorship race

A Nigerian-American scholar and educator, Dr. Akinyemi Agbede, has officially announced his intention to contest the 2026 California governorship election, presenting a vision he described as one built on service, reform and inclusive progress.

Speaking in an interview, Dr Agbede explained his reasons for joining the race, saying: “I want to lead California because I believe evidence-driven leadership, fairness and opportunity should define our future. This state deserves thoughtful solutions anchored in integrity and innovation.”

Dr Agbede, who holds a PhD in Mathematical Analysis from the University of Cambridge, said he has spent much of his career advancing STEM education and pushing for policies that increase access for under-represented groups.

He noted that his campaign would prioritise educational reform, economic expansion, technological growth and social justice issues, he believes are vital to strengthening California’s long-term competitiveness.

“California stands at a crossroads. We need leaders prepared to confront complex challenges with analytical clarity and a genuine commitment to every community, not just a privileged few,” he said.

Dr Agbede added that his candidacy is motivated by a desire for public service, stressing that, “This campaign is about ensuring every Californian, regardless of background, has the chance to thrive. Together, we can build a fairer, more innovative and more inclusive California.”
