Nigerian cuisines steal show at Yoruba carnival in Toronto

Traditional dishes from the Ikale, Ilaje, and Apoi communities in Nigeria were among the most sought-after delicacies at this year’s Yoruba Carnival held in Toronto, Canada.

According to Prince Olujimi Adekanle JAF, President of the Ikale, Ilaje, and Apoi Association in Toronto, the food segment of the cultural celebration saw high demand for local favourites such as pupuru and Òbé Eweta.

He noted that even attendees from other Yoruba subgroups, including the Ijebu, embraced the unique flavours.

“Pupuru and Òbé Eweta were the preferred choice for many, especially among the Ijebu people who couldn’t get enough of it,” Prince Adekanle said in a post shared on Facebook and sighted by Diaspora NG.

The Yoruba Carnival in Toronto is an annual event that showcases the rich cultural heritage of Yoruba-speaking communities through music, fashion, dance, and food.

Prince Adekanle expressed pride in the recognition given to the culinary contributions of the Ikale, Ilaje, and Apoi people, describing it as testament to the unity within the Yoruba diaspora in Canada.
