Nigerian graduate returns from UK to launch food business, fulfills lifelong dream

After spending time in the United Kingdom in search of greener pastures, a graduate of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Tayo Olumakin, has returned to Nigeria to pursue what he described as his real dream.

Olumakin, who earned his degree in Ecotourism and Wildlife Management in 2022, recently opened a restaurant named Providence Bites, located along Stateline, FUTA South Gate, in Ondo State.

The grand opening drew notable guests, including one of his former lecturers, Prof. Anthony Ogunjimi, and FUTA’s Director of Corporate Communications and Protocol, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo.

Speaking about his decision to leave the UK and return home, Olumakin said the work he found overseas left him unfulfilled and disconnected from his true passion, cooking.

“I traveled to the UK on a work sponsored visa after graduation, but I soon realized the grass wasn’t greener. I was working below my potential, and though I was earning, it drained me physically and mentally,” he said.

“I knew I was made for more. One day, I packed my bags and decided to come back home to build something meaningful.”

With the support of his family and a network of friends who believed in his vision, Olumakin was able to fund and establish his eatery without relying on bank loans.

He credited his friends for rallying around him, contributing financially, while he committed his personal savings to make the dream a reality.

“I’ve always been passionate about food. My dream was to run a place where people could walk in, eat well, and leave happy. That dream is now a reality because I stayed focused, worked hard, and surrounded myself with the right people.”

Offering advice to Nigerians abroad who may be struggling, he urged them not to discount the potential back home.

“Yes, Nigeria has its challenges, but there are countless opportunities here too. With a clear vision and positive mindset, it’s possible to thrive. If what you’re doing abroad isn’t bringing fulfillment, come back and build something you’re proud of.”

Advising aspiring entrepreneurs, he said: “Take the bull by the horn. Pursue your dreams relentlessly. Research your market, understand your customers, and connect with mentors and partners. Be ready to adapt and always stay positive.”
