A Nigerian, Frank Nandi, has alleged before an Indian court that officers of the Anti-Narcotics Cell in Mumbai planted illicit drugs on him during his recent arrest.
Nandi, 39, made the accusation during a court appearance following his arrest on Saturday in the Malad area of Mumbai.
He claimed that personnel from the Worli division of the Anti-Narcotics Cell framed him by placing narcotics in his possession.
According to reports by the Times of India, the arrest came after police received a tip-off and set up an operation near PJ Colony along Orlem Marve Road. Nandi, who was reportedly carrying a bag, was stopped by officers during the operation.
Authorities said that upon searching the bag, they found 200 grams of a white powdery substance, which initial tests identified as cocaine.
The drugs are said to have a street value of around Rs 2 crore, equivalent to roughly N360 million.
In addition to the alleged drugs, police also impounded a Honda City car reportedly linked to the suspect.
Nandi was brought before a Holiday Court on Sunday, where investigators requested his continued remand to allow further probing into the case.
