Canadian authorities have detained a Nigerian national, Nnamdi Enunwa, over allegations that he assaulted and stabbed his roommate during a violent confrontation in Oshawa, Ontario.
The 38-year-old suspect was apprehended following reports from residents in the Ritson Road North and Adelaide Avenue East neighbourhood who alerted law enforcement to the incident.
Police officers arrived at the scene to find Enunwa had allegedly attacked and stabbed his co-tenant, who suffered severe but non-fatal injuries.
The suspect was taken into custody without resistance, while the victim was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment of serious wounds.
In a statement, the Central East Division Police disclosed that officers responded to an armed person call at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at a residence in the affected area.
“Officers arrived on scene and located both the suspect and the victim. The suspect was arrested and the victim was transported to a local-area hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was taken into custody without incident,” the statement read.
Enunwa, who is being remanded pending a bail hearing, faces three charges: aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing a criminal offence.

The statement emphasised that details released were based on ongoing investigations and had not been established in court.

The incident comes on the heels of another case involving a Nigerian student, Babatunde Afuwape, who allegedly stabbed an Indian student to death in Canada.
