Nigerian PhD student bags $2,000 US research grant

A Nigerian doctoral researcher at Iowa State University in the United States, Onyeka Onyenemezu, has been awarded a $2,000 research grant by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to support her participation in advanced scientific training in Chemical and Biological Engineering.

The laboratory, a globally recognised research centre associated with several Nobel Prize winners, said the grant was given in recognition of Onyenemezu’s strong commitment to research excellence and professional development.

The award was disclosed in documents obtained by Diaspora Tales on Friday.

Onyenemezu commenced her PhD programme in 2021, where her research is focused on developing robust microbial pathways to enhance the efficiency and reliability of industrial fermentation processes.

The institution noted that her work has the potential to reduce the cost of producing life-saving vaccines and biologics, improve the resilience of global supply chains, and promote sustainable manufacturing of bio-based chemicals, enzymes and renewable fuels.

The statement added that her research aligns with global efforts to advance environmentally friendly and scalable biotechnological solutions for healthcare and industry.

“My long-term goal is to contribute innovative solutions at the intersection of chemical engineering, biology and data-driven analysis, particularly in areas that improve human health at scale,” she said.
