A 14-year-old Nigerian, Eghosa Ogbebor, has been shot dead in London, in an incident that has raised concerns within the local community and among Nigerians in the diaspora.
The Metropolitan Police said officers responded to reports of a shooting around 3:40pm on Thursday on Lord Warwick Street in the Woolwich area.
Emergency responders attended the scene, but the teenager was pronounced dead shortly after.
Although formal identification is still ongoing, police have disclosed the victim’s identity as Ogbebor, adding that his family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers.
Authorities confirmed the arrest of three suspects two boys aged 14 and 16, and an 18-year-old on suspicion of murder. The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
The officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, described the killing as disturbing, particularly given the victim’s young age.
“Our thoughts are with Eghosa’s family and loved ones at this very difficult time. They have requested privacy,” she said.
Card noted that the incident has heightened tension within the Woolwich community, prompting an increased police presence in the area.
She added that although arrests have been made, inquiries are ongoing, and urged members of the public with useful information or footage to assist the investigation.
