Renowned Nigerian writer, Jumoke Verissimo, has announced the launch of a project titled “Ancestral Mist: Reclaiming Afro-Brazilian Returnee Memory.”
Sharing the news on her official Facebook page, Verissimo described the initiative as more than an academic pursuit — calling it a profound personal journey that delves into the cultural and historical experiences of Afro-Brazilian returnees.
She revealed that the project, currently in its first phase, will span multiple genres and evolve over several years.
“This isn’t just academic work for me; it’s a profound personal journey I’m fully committed to,” she wrote, inviting her followers and supporters to join her from the outset by subscribing to receive monthly journal updates that will document her progress, challenges, and breakthroughs.
Verissimo also expressed gratitude for the backing she has received so far, acknowledging support from the SSHRC Explore Grant, the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University, and the encouragement of her family, friends, and colleagues.
As she embarks on what she described as a long-term creative and scholarly endeavor, the acclaimed author is extending an open invitation for others to be part of the experience from the beginning.
