Nigerians dying as anti-migrant group blocks access to South African hospitals, Union alleges

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has raised serious concerns over the safety and welfare of Nigerian nationals, alleging that some are dying after being denied access to medical care by an anti-migrant group targeting public hospitals.

In a statement this week, NUSA President Smart Nwobi said members of Operation Dudula, a controversial activist group known for its anti-immigrant stance, have been physically blocking the entrances of public health facilities across South Africa. The group is reportedly demanding identification documents and turning away anyone unable to prove South African citizenship — including some naturalised citizens who do not speak local languages.

“Nigerians have resorted to self-medication, which is dangerous and often fatal,” Nwobi said. “Many are now afraid to seek treatment at public hospitals for fear of assault or even death. This situation is becoming a daily tragedy and requires urgent intervention.”

NUSA claims that the ongoing harassment has led to multiple deaths and widespread fear among the Nigerian community. The union also warned that xenophobic incidents tend to increase during South Africa’s election periods, with foreign nationals — especially those engaged in business — often scapegoated for broader socio-economic frustrations.

“As elections draw near, the anger directed at the government is often redirected toward foreigners. Nigerians are frequently among the most affected,” Nwobi added.

Operation Dudula has repeatedly accused migrants of placing undue pressure on South Africa’s healthcare system. Earlier in August, members of the group stormed the Lilian Ngoyi Community Health Centre in Diepkloof in an attempt to shut down the facility.

The South African Department of Health has condemned such actions as unlawful and dangerous. “We do not condone these disruptions, which interfere with essential healthcare services,” said department spokesperson Foster Mohale in a recent statement.
