Nigerians voice concern over Zimbabwean woman’s death

The Nigerian community in Dundee, Scotland, has expressed growing unease following the killing of 39-year-old Zimbabwean national, Fortune Gomo, who was fatally attacked on South Road last.

Many residents described the incident as deeply disturbing and a cause for alarm within the African community.

Diaspora NG had reported that the Police in Scotland confirmed that Gomo died from severe injuries sustained around 4:25 p.m.

Local accounts suggested that she was stabbed while walking along the road.

“It was a stabbing,” said Adedayomi Peter, a Nigerian resident in the area. “People here are genuinely worried.”

Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, who is leading the investigation, extended condolences to the victim’s family, noting that specially trained officers were supporting them.

He reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to community safety.

“Our investigation is still at an early stage, but I urge members of the public to avoid speculating—especially on social media. We are looking into several lines of inquiry,” Sharp said.

He added that police presence in the area has been increased to provide reassurance and encouraged residents with concerns to approach officers on duty.

A senior member of the Nigerian community, speaking anonymously, said Gomo’s death has had a profound impact on the African population in Dundee.

“She studied at the University of Dundee and had personal and academic ties with many Nigerians here. As a community, we’ve rallied together to mourn her and support her memory,” he said.

He confirmed that Police Scotland had charged a suspect with murder and assured community members that there is no immediate danger.

The source also revealed that representatives of the African community recently met with Police Scotland officials to discuss concerns and build trust.

“We’ve held peaceful demonstrations since July 5. They’ve been orderly and purposeful,” he said. “Police have responded constructively. The suspect is in custody, and the charge is now confirmed as murder.”

During the meeting, members of the African community raised alarm over rising knife attacks and antisocial behavior in Dundee.

They also expressed concern about the growing number of individuals wearing balaclavas in public, which has contributed to heightened fear and tension.

He also noted that hate-filled and inflammatory social media posts have surfaced since the incident and said police authorities have pledged to monitor and address such content appropriately.

The University of Dundee, where Gomo once worked as a postdoctoral research assistant in the Department of Geography, also reacted to her death.

In a message to staff and students, Interim Principal and Vice Chancellor Professor Nigel Seaton said, “We are all deeply shocked by this heartbreaking incident. Our thoughts are with her loved ones during this time of grief.”
