Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has described Nigeria’s diaspora community as one of the most vibrant in the world, noting that over 17 million citizens are spread across every continent and making remarkable contributions in various fields.
Tuggar made the remark during a working visit to the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Abuja, where he commended the commission’s chairperson, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, for her role in advancing the interests of Nigerians abroad.
“They are doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, academics, athletes, creatives, and leaders in their fields. In 2024 alone, remittances from Nigerians abroad amounted to over $20 billion,” the minister said.
“This represents a vital lifeline to our economy and a testament to the enduring commitment of our diaspora to national development.”
Tuggar urged NiDCOM to deepen engagement with the diaspora, creating more opportunities for investment and skills transfer while countering negative narratives and ensuring younger generations remain connected to their roots.
Responding, Dabiri-Erewa praised the diaspora community’s contributions, citing major investments such as a stroke center in Imo State and a cancer hospital in Lagos.
She noted that NiDCOM has launched a diaspora data-mapping project to track the demographics and impact of Nigerians overseas.
