Olubadan of Ibadanland dies two days after 90th birthday

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Olalere Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90, just two days after marking his birthday.

According to palace sources, the monarch died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, plunging the ancient city of Ibadan into mourning.

His passing comes barely a year after he was installed as the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024, following the demise of Oba Lekan Balogun in March of the same year.

Oba Olakulehin’s brief reign was characterised by his persistent call for peace and unity within Ibadanland and across Yoruba traditional institutions.

Despite concerns about his health before and after ascending the throne, he remained committed to his duties with the support of his council.

Born on July 5, 1935, the late monarch steadily climbed the traditional ladder in Ibadan, holding numerous chieftaincy titles before reaching the pinnacle as Olubadan.

Tributes have continued to pour in from far and wide, with political leaders, traditional rulers, and residents of Oyo State paying homage to the late king’s legacy.

Official announcements regarding his funeral and the next steps in succession are expected soon from the Olubadan-in-Council and the Oyo State Government.
