A Nigerian businessman and infrastructure developer, Biodun Otunola, has been appointed as the first Honorary Consul of Mexico in Lagos, marking a new phase in diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and the North American nation.

Otunola’s inauguration, held in Lagos on Monday, was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials and leaders from the business community.

Speaking at the event, the Ambassador of Mexico to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda, described the appointment as a significant step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation between both countries.

Miranda said Otunola’s experience and understanding of the local environment would play a crucial role in promoting collaboration and building stronger ties between Mexico and Nigeria.

He added that the new consulate would serve as a vital platform for dialogue, economic engagement and mutual understanding between the two nations.

Also present at the ceremony was the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin.

The event underscored Lagos’ growing strategic importance as a gateway for trade, investment and international partnerships within West Africa.

In his remarks, Otunola expressed gratitude to the Mexican government for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to strengthen relations between both countries.

He noted that Mexico’s large economy presents significant opportunities that Nigeria can explore, particularly in sectors such as power, tourism and manufacturing.

Otunola also assured the business community that Lagos remains open to international partnerships, expressing optimism that stronger collaboration between Nigeria and Mexico would boost investment, create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the coming years.
