S’Africa restores power to Nigerian High Commission after debt settlement

Electricity has been restored to the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, following the payment of outstanding municipal utility bills owed to the City of Tshwane.

The power supply to the diplomatic mission was disconnected on Monday as part of enforcement measures over unpaid service charges, a move that sparked public attention.

Confirming the action, the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Nasiphi Moya, disclosed in a post on X that the High Commission had accumulated debts for utility services.

“We disconnected electricity at the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria due to outstanding payments owed to the city,” Moya stated, sharing a photograph of the premises.

The development highlighted ongoing operational challenges faced by some Nigerian diplomatic missions abroad, including funding and administrative constraints.

In a follow-up statement, the mayor said the city would restore electricity once the debt was settled, appreciating the mission for complying with its obligations.

She later confirmed that power had been reconnected after payment was made, thanking the High Commission for honouring its financial commitment.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
