Three Nigerians arrested in Kenya over alleged cyber fraud

Three Nigerians have been arrested in Mwaliko Estate, Mwea Town in Kenya over allegations of cyber related fraud, following a raid carried out by operatives of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

According to a report by Tuko News, a Kenyan digital platform, the suspects were picked up on Wednesday after investigators stormed their residence.

They were identified as Peter Chukwujekwu, Alazor Chukulute Sunday and Nnalue Chiagozie Samwe, all of whom were allegedly trailed after residents raised concerns about unusual late night movements in their apartment.

The DCI, which confirmed the operation, said the arrests were made during “a multi agency raid targeting a cyber fraud ring” in the area.

The suspects, who reportedly claimed to be running an online business, were said to be residing in Kenya without proper documentation and lacked valid work permits.

Their arrest adds to a series of similar cases involving Nigerians detained abroad for offences ranging from cyber fraud to drug and human trafficking.

In June 2023, Kenyan authorities rounded up 19 Nigerians in Nairobi for their alleged involvement in electronic fraud targeting locals, a syndicate that authorities said relied heavily on social media to lure victims.

“The fraudsters start by befriending you on social media (Facebook), and once you accept the friend request, they initiate a friendly chat that promises the victim goodies to be sent through DHL at the airport,” the DCI explained.
