Türkiye, Nigeria sign nine agreements to deepen bilateral cooperation

Türkiye and Nigeria on Tuesday signed nine agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations across key sectors following high-level talks between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Ankara.

The agreements were concluded after closed-door discussions and delegation-level meetings held at the Turkish Presidential Palace, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation between the two countries.

Areas covered by the agreements include diaspora affairs, media and communication, education, defence, women’s development and economic relations, reflecting the broad scope of the growing partnership.

Among the accords was a Memorandum of Understanding between the Presidency of Turks Abroad and Related Communities and Nigeria’s Commission for Nigerians in the Diaspora, alongside another MoU on cooperation in media and communication.

The two countries also agreed to deepen collaboration in higher education and halal accreditation, with Türkiye’s Halal Accreditation Agency partnering Nigeria’s National Accreditation System to strengthen halal quality infrastructure.

In a move to boost trade and investment, both sides adopted a joint declaration establishing a Joint Economic and Trade Committee, while a separate protocol was signed to enhance military cooperation.

Further agreements were reached on educational cooperation, diplomatic training between Türkiye’s Diplomatic Academy and Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Academy, as well as collaboration on women’s affairs between Türkiye’s Ministry of Family and Social Policies and Nigeria’s Ministry of Women’s Affairs.

Diplomatic relations between both countries date back to 1960, with trade ties continuing to expand. Trade volume between Türkiye and Nigeria reached about $688.4m in the first 11 months of 2025, positioning Nigeria as Türkiye’s largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Beyond trade, cooperation has grown in defence, counterterrorism and education, with more than 50 Turkish-owned companies operating in Nigeria and hundreds of Nigerians benefiting from Türkiye’s scholarship programme over the years.
