UK court jails Ghanaian chef over unsanitary food storage

A United Kingdom court has sentenced a Ghanaian chef, Stephen Akuoko, to two years’ imprisonment after he was found guilty of storing food meant for public consumption in unsanitary conditions, including a bathroom.

Akuoko, 62, was exposed in October 2024 when firefighters responding to a blaze at his residence discovered large quantities of fish kept in unhygienic environments.

Reports indicated that the responders found mackerel stored in a bathtub and on the bathroom floor beside a toilet, prompting further investigation by environmental health authorities.

The convict, who operated a ready-meal business known as Tribal Foods in Watford, was subsequently issued a remedial order. However, his products were later traced to local shops, leading to legal action.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of food safety violations at the St Albans Magistrates’ Court on February 11, 2026.

The court sentenced him to two consecutive 12-month jail terms, suspended for two years, and imposed a five-year ban prohibiting him from engaging in food-related businesses. He was also ordered to pay £2,500 to cover the cost of the council’s investigation.

During sentencing, the presiding judge, Francis Sheridan, described the food as unsafe for human consumption, warning that the consequences could have been fatal.

The judge noted that the defendant could have faced more serious charges if any consumer had died as a result of consuming the contaminated products.

The case has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many expressing outrage over the conditions under which the food was prepared and calling for stricter monitoring of food vendors.
