UK court jails Nigerian for life over ex-girlfriend’s murder

A Nigerian national living in the United Kingdom, Adedapo Adegbola, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his former girlfriend, Stephanie Irons, by a Nottingham Crown Court.

The trial judge, Nirmal Shant KC, on Thursday ordered that Adegbola must serve a minimum of 25 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole.

While delivering judgment, the judge said Adegbola had been in a short-lived relationship with Irons after they met as colleagues at work, noting that the relationship ended due to his controlling behaviour, which he failed to accept.

The court heard that on October 21, Adegbola, aged 40, attacked and killed the 23-year-old at her residence in the Mapperley area of Nottinghamshire.

Investigations revealed that Adegbola had bought two knives after work and travelled by taxi to Irons’ home on Westdale Lane West on the day of the incident.

Adegbola later pleaded guilty on January 26 to the charge of murder.

Nottingham Police told the court that Irons died from a knife injury to her neck, adding that marks consistent with defensive injuries were found on her arms, indicating she tried to resist the attack.
