UK okays seizure of migrants phones to track smuggling rings

The British government has rolled out new powers allowing border and security officials to take mobile phones and sim cards from migrants even when no arrest has been made, as part of efforts to strengthen intelligence gathering against human trafficking networks.

The authority is provided under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act passed in December 2025 and now in force.

Officials said the measure is designed to help security agencies identify routes, contacts and organisers involved in illegal Channel crossings.

Speaking on the policy, border security minister Alex Norris said the government was determined to clamp down on the criminal groups profiting from irregular migration and would use every lawful tool available to disrupt their operations.

Under the new rules officers may search clothing and personal effects and inspect areas where electronic devices could be concealed.

The Home Office said the power will be used proportionately and in line with existing safeguards.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also directed the Home Office to accelerate reforms in the asylum system, including plans to shut temporary accommodation facilities earlier than the 2029 timeline earlier announced.

Official figures show that 41,472 migrants crossed the Channel into Britain in 2025, making it the second highest yearly total recorded.

The number represents an increase over the previous two years and has kept migration at the centre of political debate.
