The Metropolitan Police has charged a 16-year-old suspect in connection with the killing of a Nigerian teenager, Eghosa Ogbebor, in London.
In a statement released on Friday, the police said the suspect, whose identity is being withheld due to legal restrictions, was formally charged with murder and is scheduled to appear before Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.
Ogbebor, 14, a British-Nigerian, was fatally shot in the Woolwich area of London on April 3. Emergency services had responded to reports of the incident a day earlier, but the teenager was later pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to save him.
According to the police, the accused, said to be from Romford, was initially arrested on April 4 and released on bail before being re-arrested on April 9 and subsequently charged.
“A boy has been charged with murder over the shooting of 14-year-old Eghosa Ogbebor in Woolwich,” the statement read.
Authorities also disclosed that other suspects previously arrested in connection with the case have been granted bail while investigations continue.
These include two boys aged 14 and 16, as well as an 18-year-old man, all of whom were detained shortly after the incident.
The police further confirmed that another 16-year-old suspect was arrested on April 10 on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
Additionally, a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man arrested in Woolwich, alongside a 46-year-old man suspected of assisting an offender, have all been released on bail pending further inquiries.
The police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are ongoing.
