UK visit: Tinubu singles out Arsenal’s Saka, Eze, others as he addresses King Charles

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday drew attention to top athletes of Nigerian heritage, including Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, while speaking before King Charles III at a state function held in Windsor Castle.

During his address, the Nigerian leader pointed to the achievements of Nigerians and their descendants in the United Kingdom, noting that their success stories reflect the enduring relationship between both countries.

He also referenced heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, alongside other sports personalities, to emphasise the strong human and cultural connections binding Nigeria and Britain.

Tinubu stressed that the partnership between the two nations goes beyond historical links, adding that both countries share common goals centred on growth, resilience, and prosperity.

He described Nigerians in the UK as a highly impactful diaspora group, noting their significant contributions to national development across various sectors.

According to him, “Nigerians contribute enormously to the vitality of this nation. Within the National Health Service, Nigerian doctors and nurses play an indispensable role in delivering healthcare.”

He continued, “Nigerian-trained doctors are among the largest groups of international medical professionals serving the NHS. In sport, rugby players such as Maro Itoje, footballers including Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, and champion boxer Anthony Joshua illustrate the remarkable human connection that links Nigeria and the United Kingdom.”

The President further highlighted the importance of the Commonwealth of Nations, describing it as a unifying platform that brings together 56 nations.

“Our partnership is further strengthened through the Commonwealth of Nations, which connects 56 countries under Your Majesty’s leadership,” he said.

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to playing a constructive role within the organisation, expressing confidence in its continued relevance on the global stage.
