US-based filmmaker, Okonkwo sets sights on elevating nollywood to global standards

Christopher Okonkwo, a Nigerian-born celebrity videographer and filmmaker based in the United States, has unveiled plans to redefine the Nollywood experience through a new wave of high-quality, globally competitive productions.

Okonkwo, who hails from Anambra State, has built a reputable career in the U.S. entertainment industry, working behind the scenes with some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars, including Phyno and Flavour.

In 2011, he founded his production company, Louva Concept LLC, and expanded its operations to the United States in 2016, with reach across Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

In an exclusive interview with THE WHISTLER, the filmmaker described his return to the Nigerian film industry as more than a creative project—it is, according to him, a mission to elevate local storytelling to international standards.

“Filmmaking isn’t just a profession for me; it’s a calling,” Okonkwo said.

“I want to tell authentic African stories using world-class visuals—stories that reflect our culture, resilience, and daily experiences.”

Drawing from his years in the American entertainment scene, Okonkwo emphasized that the discipline, planning, and attention to detail he acquired abroad are now the tools he’s bringing home to reshape Nollywood’s narrative. He explained that his goal is to blend the raw creative energy of Nigerian talent with the precision and structure of Hollywood.

“This isn’t just a one-time return. It’s the beginning of a long-term investment in Nigeria’s creative landscape,” he revealed. “Through mentorship, training workshops, and collaborative projects, I want to nurture emerging talent and create a thriving ecosystem for filmmakers.”

While acknowledging the infrastructural challenges in Nigeria—such as erratic power supply, limited access to modern equipment, and inconsistent technical support—Okonkwo remains undeterred. Instead, he sees those challenges as opportunities for innovation.

“I ship in critical gear, work with dependable local crews, and prioritize training,” he said. “Limitations often push us to become more creative—and that’s where true innovation starts.”

Okonkwo’s ambitions go beyond filmmaking.
He recently completed a documentary tour with real estate firm Nedcomoaks Ltd, capturing their journey across cities such as London, Manchester, Lagos, Atlanta, Toronto, and Calgary.

“Nedcomoaks is about vision and community-building, and that aligns with my purpose as a creative,” he noted.

“Telling their story across continents reminds me that we, as Nigerians, are capable of building greatness—and our stories deserve to be shared.”

With his upcoming film project already in the works, Okonkwo hopes to inspire the next generation of Nigerian storytellers.

“If just one young creative sees our work and says, ‘If he did it, I can too,’ then I’ve achieved something meaningful,” he said.
