A Nigerian serving in the United States Army has stirred widespread reactions online after posting a pointed message directed at Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, in the aftermath of confirmed U.S. airstrikes on Islamic State targets in Sokoto State.
The development comes amid renewed public debate over the role of the United States in Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts, following comments by President Donald Trump, who pledged to eliminate extremist threats targeting Christians and other civilians.
Sheikh Gumi had earlier courted controversy after condemning the U.S. airstrikes, cautioning against foreign military involvement in Nigeria’s internal security operations.
The cleric also faulted the Federal Government for failing to seek assistance from countries such as Turkey and Pakistan, a position that sparked intense debates across social media platforms.
Reacting to Gumi’s comments, a Nigerian-born U.S. soldier, identified online as @Horiyourme, shared a screenshot from a video message featuring the cleric and attached a caption that referenced the airstrikes.
In the post, the soldier wrote, “Update on @POTUS air strike: First you deliver the baby, then you get the placenta. Sheikh Gumi, your days are numbered.”
The message quickly went viral, attracting mixed reactions from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
While some users applauded the post, others condemned it, triggering heated exchanges in the comment sections.
