US orders deportation of Nigerian ex-gang member over armed robbery, drug crimes

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed plans to deport Ibrahim Tunde Ijaoba, a Nigerian national convicted in the US for a string of violent and drug-related offences.

In a notice published on Monday, ICE said Ijaoba, described by the agency as a former member of the notorious Bloods street gang, entered the country unlawfully and accumulated an extensive criminal record while in the US.

The agency said his convictions include aggravated assault on a police officer with a firearm, multiple counts of assault and aggravated assault, armed robbery, obstruction, drug sales and escaping police custody.

ICE added that Ijaoba has a final removal order and remains in its custody pending deportation.

“Ibrahim Tunde Ijaoba is a criminal illegal alien from Nigeria and former member of the Bloods — a notoriously violent street gang,” the ICE notice said, summarising the agency’s findings.

The disclosure comes amid heightened enforcement activity by US authorities. Separately, the Federal Bureau of Investigation recently arrested another Nigerian national, Oluwadamilola Ogooluwa Bamigboye, on allegations that include evading arrest and assaulting a federal agent; Bamigboye and an alleged accomplice, Rekeya Frazier, have been arraigned on related charges, including overstaying a student visa, authorities said.

ICE did not disclose a deportation date for Ijaoba. Federal immigration and law-enforcement officials said deportation proceedings would follow the conclusion of necessary legal and administrative processes.
