US releases $32.5m to support displaced Nigerians

The United States Government has released $32.5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria.

According to a statement by the US Embassy on Wednesday, the fund will enable the WFP to deliver food and nutrition support to hundreds of thousands of people displaced by ongoing conflicts across the country.

The embassy said the intervention would benefit 764,205 people in the conflict-affected Northeast and Northwest regions, providing critical relief to communities struggling with insecurity and disruption of livelihoods.

As part of the support package, 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, along with 43,235 children, are set to receive complementary nutrition top-ups through electronic food vouchers.

“The initiative is designed to improve dietary diversity and prevent malnutrition among the most vulnerable groups,” the embassy stated, noting that the aid comes at a time of severe food shortages and rising living costs in affected areas.

The US contribution underscored its commitment to humanitarian assistance in Nigeria, where millions continue to face displacement and food insecurity due to violence and economic pressures.
