A viral video posted on X by user Somto Okonkwo has ignited fresh debate over the growing number of Nigerian men reportedly dying from stress-related conditions in the United Kingdom.
In the video sighted by Diaspora NG, a woman who did not reveal her name lamented the pressure many men face abroad, accusing some of carrying the full weight of family responsibilities despite earning the same or even less than their partners.
She criticised men who insisted on being “man of the house” while shouldering overwhelming financial burdens.
“For this UK, responsibility, don’t find so many responsible men in this country… You the answer husband of the house,” she said, adding that she had witnessed several stroke cases involving men as young as 45 at her workplace, which she attributed to stress.
Her comments drew a strong reaction from Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as Oluomo of Derby and founder of the Nigerians in UK Community (NIUKCommunity).
Responding under the post, Kuti said the pattern of deaths among Nigerian men in Britain was becoming disturbing.
“I’m not sure how widespread this is, but it’s becoming impossible to ignore: we have a serious issue with the rising number of Nigerian men dying here in the UK. Just last month, we buried two of our brothers,” he wrote.
Kuti argued that traditional notions of masculinity do not apply in the diaspora, stressing that survival in the UK depends on shared responsibilities and partnership.
He urged men to abandon the cultural pressure to shoulder every burden alone.
“Over here, both partners contribute to make life easier… Please, don’t kill yourself trying to do everything alone,” he warned.
He advised Nigerian men to prioritise their mental, physical and emotional health, adding that asking for help should not be seen as weakness.
