Nigerian-American driver clinches Formula Regional Oceania Trophy

Nigerian-American racer Ugochukwu has claimed the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy, just three months after parting ways with the McLaren F1 development programme.

The 18-year-old dominated the season, winning four of the 15 races and finishing 15 points ahead of Audi F1 junior Freddie Slater. Ugochukwu also impressed with his consistency, standing on the podium in every round and placing outside the top 10 only twice.

“It’s an amazing feeling to cross the line,” Ugochukwu said after the New Zealand Grand Prix. “The race felt longer than usual, but I’m just happy it’s done and the championship is ours.”

Reflecting on his season, he added, “It has been a strong campaign, and I’m incredibly grateful to the team. They delivered a fantastic performance all year, and I’m even happier for them than for myself.”

The young driver faced a potential setback at the season finale when a suspension issue during qualifying triggered a technical penalty, dropping him to 13th on the starting grid. Despite the challenge, he secured enough points to seal the title.

“It wasn’t easy,” Ugochukwu admitted. “I had to stay focused and keep the bigger picture in mind, and thankfully, we got the championship.”

Ugochukwu is now set to return to FIA Formula 3 with Campos Racing, with the new season kicking off from March 6–8 at the Australian Grand Prix.
