UK-based Nigerian lawyer begins citizenship renunciation process

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian lawyer, Baron Chymaker, has announced that he has formally commenced the process of renouncing his Nigerian citizenship.

Chymaker disclosed the development in a post on his X handle on Thursday, stating that his legal representative in Nigeria had completed the submission of the required documents to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

According to him, the application has been filed and the prescribed fees paid, expressing optimism that the process would be concluded soon.

“I have today received confirmation from my lawyer in Nigeria that my application to renounce my Nigerian citizenship has been submitted to the SGF and all fees paid as appropriate. I cannot wait for the approval,” he wrote.

The legal practitioner is widely known on social media for commenting on international law, legal practice in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, as well as cryptocurrency-related issues.

Over the years, Chymaker has been vocal in his criticism of aspects of Nigeria’s judicial system, particularly the application of the doctrine of judicial precedent, also known as stare decisis.

He has also questioned some judicial outcomes in election petition cases, arguing that strict adherence to precedent could produce unfair results.

The lawyer has consistently encouraged Nigerian-trained legal practitioners to pursue further professional development or consider practising in jurisdictions with more advanced legal systems.

As of the time of filing this report, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation had not issued any official statement regarding his application to renounce his Nigerian citizenship.
