Politics abroad about service, not personal gain – Canada-based Nigerian councillor

A Nigerian-born politician based in Canada, Owodunni, has said that participation in politics outside the country requires a mindset focused on service rather than personal benefit.

Owodunni, who currently serves as a city councillor in Kitchener, said many Nigerians interested in political participation abroad must first understand that the system prioritises community service and contribution to society.

Speaking about his journey, the councillor explained that he relocated to Canada in 2016 with his family after his wife obtained permanent residency, noting that the move was motivated by the desire to explore new opportunities.

He said adapting to life in Canada required adjusting to a different workplace culture, communication style and institutional systems, which many immigrants initially find challenging.

According to him, his entry into politics came unexpectedly after a deputy mayor who served on the board of a company he worked with encouraged him to consider running for public office.

Owodunni recalled that he was the only Black person in the room at the time and had lived in Canada for less than a year when the suggestion was first made, adding that the idea initially seemed unrealistic.

He said the encouragement he received from several political leaders and mentors later strengthened his resolve to pursue public service, eventually leading to his decision to run for the position of city councillor.

The Nigerian politician explained that his campaign was largely powered by volunteers and friends from different professional backgrounds who offered their expertise in areas such as speech writing, project management and graphic design.

He added that the support he received from Nigerians across different ethnic groups in Canada was overwhelming, noting that many people he had never met personally volunteered their time and resources to support his political ambition.

Owodunni said the experience reinforced his belief in the unity and resilience of Nigerians in the diaspora.

Speaking on his responsibilities in office, the councillor said his municipality was currently focused on supporting local businesses and strengthening infrastructure while also addressing community concerns such as road maintenance and urban development.

He noted that local governments in Canada rely heavily on data and community feedback to shape policies and resolve public complaints.

Owodunni also said he maintains close engagement with immigrant communities by working with leaders of ethnic associations and community organisations to better understand their concerns.

He added that such engagement had enabled him to help address issues affecting immigrants, including facilitating dialogue between Nigerian authorities and Canadian officials on matters such as driver’s licence recognition.

While advising Nigerians abroad who are interested in politics, Owodunni urged them to begin by serving their communities long before seeking public office.

He stressed that those aspiring to political positions must demonstrate a track record of service and develop strong public speaking and leadership skills.

The councillor added that his position also provides an opportunity to strengthen ties between Canada and Nigeria by building trust, encouraging collaboration and connecting stakeholders from both countries.
