Benin election: Nigerian youth leader urges neutrality among compatriots

The President of Nigerian Youth in the Benin Republic, Ebuka Okonkwo, has called on Nigerians residing in the country to remain neutral ahead of the presidential election scheduled for Sunday, April 12.

Okonkwo gave the advice in a statement issued on Friday, urging Nigerian youths to conduct themselves responsibly and uphold peace during the election period.

He noted that elections often come with heightened political tension, warning that foreigners could easily become entangled in sensitive issues if caution is not exercised.

“Election periods are delicate, and as non-citizens, it is important that Nigerian youths avoid situations that could draw them into political activities or controversies,” he said.

Okonkwo cautioned against participation in political rallies, campaigns, or confrontational engagements, stressing that such involvement could lead to unnecessary conflict or misinterpretation.

He emphasised the need for Nigerians in the country to prioritise unity and protect the nation’s image abroad through disciplined and law-abiding behaviour.

The youth leader further advised them to channel their energy into productive ventures and community development while maintaining cordial relationships with their host communities.

According to him, discipline and restraint are essential in sustaining mutual respect between Nigerians and the authorities in the Benin Republic.

He also urged Nigerians to promptly report any security concerns to relevant bodies, including the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation and the Nigerian Embassy in Cotonou.

Okonkwo added that staying away from political participation would help shield Nigerians from avoidable risks and prevent any form of misrepresentation during the election period.

He, however, extended his goodwill to the government and people of the Benin Republic, expressing hope for a peaceful and credible electoral process while reaffirming the commitment of Nigerian youths to peaceful coexistence and respect for the country’s laws.
