Diaspora group hails Tinubu’s choice of Jimoh Ibrahim as UN envoy, cites early diplomatic gains

The Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians has commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, saying the appointment has already produced notable diplomatic achievements.

The group made the commendation in a statement issued by its President, Tomi Aregbesola, following a courtesy visit by its leadership to Ibrahim at the Nigeria House in New York.

According to the organisation, Nigeria’s diplomatic visibility and influence within the United Nations have grown significantly in less than two months since Ibrahim assumed office.

Aregbesola said the visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to assess the ambassador’s performance and Nigeria’s growing role at the global body, describing his leadership as strategic, proactive and result-driven.

She noted that one of the major milestones recorded during his tenure was Nigeria’s emergence as chair of the Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the body responsible for budgetary and administrative matters.

The organisation also pointed to the election of Olufemi Elias into the United Nations International Law Commission, describing the development as a reflection of international confidence in Nigeria’s legal expertise.

It further cited Nigeria’s successful election into the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women for the 2027–2030 term through Esther Eghobamien-Mshelia, as well as the appointment of Ahunna Eziakonwa as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Africa.

Aregbesola urged President Tinubu to sustain what she described as a merit-based approach in making appointments to positions with international responsibilities.

She also called for the appointment of more qualified Nigerians into strategic institutions, including the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, noting that such decisions would strengthen collaboration between the Federal Government and Nigerians living abroad while advancing national development.

The diaspora group further appreciated Ibrahim for expressing support for its activities, including the annual Nigerian Independence Day Parade scheduled to hold in New York in October.
