Diaspora icons Ufodike, Adeduntan elevate Nigerian excellence

Nigerian excellence continues to shine on the global stage through the outstanding achievements of Prof. Akolisa Ufodike and Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan, two distinguished Nigerians whose accomplishments highlight the nation’s strength beyond its borders.

Under the leadership of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has proudly celebrated these figures as emblematic of Nigeria’s growing influence internationally.

Their recent milestones in public service and sports stand as powerful reminders of the impact Nigerians are making worldwide.

Prof. Akolisa Ufodike, a Nigerian-Canadian and Deputy Minister of Trade, Immigration and Multiculturalism in Alberta, recently received the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal.

This honor, awarded to only 474 outstanding Albertans—including former premiers, chief justices, and legislative members—recognizes his exemplary service and leadership. Hon. Dabiri-Erewa praised Ufodike’s dedication and consistent efforts, describing the award as a testament to his hard work and commitment to advancing inclusive policies and good governance in Canada.

His influence resonates not only in North America but also as a beacon of Nigerian dedication on the international stage.

In sports, Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan has made history as the newly appointed Head Coach of the George Washington Revolutionaries Women’s Basketball team in the United States.

Her journey to this groundbreaking role reflects her unwavering determination and coaching excellence. During her tenure at Colgate University, she led the team to consecutive 20-win seasons and a Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) appearance.

Returning to George Washington University—where she once served as an assistant coach—Adeduntan now leads the program she helped shape.

Hon. Dabiri-Erewa hailed her appointment as a defining moment for Nigerian women and the African diaspora, underscoring her resilience and passion as an embodiment of Nigerian ambition breaking global barriers.

Beyond coaching, Adeduntan is also a distinguished academic, holding a PhD in Nursing.

She is the daughter of Prince Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, a Harvard-trained cardiovascular surgeon and former Oyo State Commissioner of Health. Her rise from Ibadan to the pinnacle of American collegiate basketball continues to inspire many, illustrating the powerful combination of talent, opportunity, and perseverance.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission remains committed to recognizing and supporting Nigerians whose achievements uplift the nation’s reputation worldwide.

The successes of Ufodike and Adeduntan are not merely personal victories but a celebration of Nigeria’s enduring spirit of excellence that transcends borders.
