The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has said the Federal Government is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and will take necessary steps to safeguard Nigerians living in the region.
The commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, noting that authorities are in constant touch with relevant agencies over the unfolding situation.
According to him, the commission has received enquiries from some Nigerians residing in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Iran regarding possible evacuation plans should the need arise.
Balogun explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is collaborating with appropriate government bodies to determine the next line of action.
He urged Nigerians in affected countries to adhere strictly to travel advisories and make use of emergency contact lines provided by the ministry.
He assured that no Nigerian would be left vulnerable, stressing that the protection of citizens abroad remains a priority for the government.
The Federal Government had on Saturday advised Nigerians in the Middle East, particularly those in Iran, to heighten their security awareness following escalating tensions in the region.
Citizens were cautioned to stay alert, avoid sensitive locations such as military and government facilities, and remain conscious of their environment.
The advisory followed reports of coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, with Iranian authorities said to have responded with counter-strikes in parts of the Gulf, further raising concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in the region.
