Former Radio Nigeria broadcaster becomes Mayor in London Borough

A former Radio Nigeria broadcaster, Roseline Ogunro, has been appointed Mayor of Islington, a borough in London, United Kingdom, marking another milestone in a career that has spanned broadcasting, community service and public leadership.

Ogunro, 73, officially assumed office on May 27 after years of involvement in volunteer work and advocacy, particularly for people living with disabilities and women.

Speaking on her appointment, the British-Nigerian described her journey as one defined by determination and perseverance, recalling the challenges faced by women in the broadcasting industry during the early stages of her career.

She said the new role would provide an opportunity to engage more closely with residents across Islington and deepen her understanding of the borough’s diverse communities.

“It means the world to me. I now have the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and learn more about the communities that make up Islington,” she said.

Ogunro also highlighted her long-standing commitment to volunteerism, noting that she had been actively involved in community service both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, including through Soroptimist International, an organisation focused on empowering women.

Reacting to the development, veteran broadcaster Soni Irabor congratulated Ogunro, recalling her years at Radio Nigeria where she gained popularity for presenting the Family Favourite programme.

Irabor also recounted her experience during the February 1976 military coup attempt that claimed the life of former Nigerian Head of State, Murtala Mohammed, noting that Ogunro spent 27 hours trapped inside a Radio Nigeria studio amid the crisis.

Ogunro holds a diploma in English and a bachelor’s degree in law.
