NiDCOM warns Nigerians against fake overseas job offers, irregular migration

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has cautioned Nigerians against irregular migration and unverified job offers abroad, warning that many citizens continue to fall victim to exploitation and human trafficking schemes.

The Commission issued the warning while receiving a Nigerian victim of labour exploitation and human trafficking, Mrs. Busola Victoria Alale, who recently returned from Cairo, Egypt.

NiDCOM stressed the need for Nigerians to verify all foreign employment opportunities through appropriate government channels, insisting that due diligence remains essential in avoiding exploitation overseas.

According to a statement by the Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Alale, a 41-year-old indigene of Ogun State, was received at the Lagos Airport by the Head of NiDCOM’s Lagos Office, Mr. Dipo Odebowale, on behalf of the Commission’s Chairman/CEO, Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Her return was reportedly facilitated by an anonymous philanthropist who funded her repatriation, covering several millions of naira after learning of her ordeal.

Speaking upon her arrival, Alale recounted her experience in Cairo, describing what she called harsh and inhumane working conditions while employed as a domestic worker.

“I was subjected to extremely long working hours, sometimes from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 a.m. the following day without rest, and I was moved between multiple employers in a single day,” she said.

She further alleged that the agent who facilitated her travel seized all her earnings, leaving her without financial benefit from her work.

Alale said she left Nigeria after her small frozen food business collapsed in search of better opportunities abroad, but regretted the decision, noting that the promises made to her were deceptive.

She also cautioned Nigerian youths, particularly young women, to be wary of fake overseas job offers, especially in domestic work, which she said often expose migrants to abuse and exploitation.

Alale expressed gratitude to Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the anonymous donor who funded her return, and the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in Cairo, Ambassador Adesoye, for their roles in facilitating her rescue and safe repatriation.
