Nigerian groups in South Africa seek urgent support for stranded citizens

The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) and the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) have called for immediate humanitarian assistance for Nigerians currently stranded in parts of the country.

The appeal was contained in a joint statement issued by leaders of the two diaspora organisations on Saturday, as concerns grow over the welfare of affected nationals.

According to the statement, the situation has been worsened by an ongoing evacuation process, which has left vulnerable individuals—including women, children, and families—waiting indefinitely for further arrangements.

The groups explained that many of those affected are presently taking shelter around the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, where conditions have become increasingly difficult, prompting the emergency appeal for support.

They therefore urged Nigerians, community leaders, businesses, and other organisations across South Africa to mobilise assistance to help cushion the hardship being faced by the stranded citizens.

The statement noted that contributions could come in various forms, including food items, basic supplies, temporary welfare support, financial assistance, and other essential humanitarian relief capable of easing their plight.

It stressed that the crisis called for collective responsibility and compassion, adding that even modest contributions could make a significant difference in restoring dignity and hope to those affected.

Reaffirming their appeal, the groups said the moment required unity among Nigerians in the diaspora, insisting that “a Nigerian in need anywhere remains a responsibility for all,” and calling for sustained solidarity in addressing the situation.
