Nigerian lawyer joins New York Bar, advocates global certification for practitioners

Nigerian-born legal practitioner, Onome Cynthia Anakanire, has been admitted to the Bar of the State of New York in the United States, a milestone expected to strengthen her involvement in cross-border legal practice and international regulatory matters.

Anakanire, who was called to the Nigerian Bar a decade ago, said her latest achievement underscored the importance of continuous learning and the need for legal professionals to acquire international qualifications.

According to her, obtaining global certifications would enhance practitioners’ capacity to operate across jurisdictions and showcase their expertise beyond Nigeria’s borders.

With interests spanning compliance, data protection, privacy law and emerging technologies, Anakanire has built a profile that cuts across multiple jurisdictions. Her admission into the New York Bar places her among a growing number of Nigerian-trained lawyers expanding their practice into international legal markets.

Members of the legal community described the feat as a reflection of dedication, resilience and professional excellence.

A cross-border legal practice advocate, Lugard Gbenga Agbomoagan, said the development further demonstrated the ability of Nigerian-trained lawyers to thrive in some of the world’s most demanding legal systems.

He noted that Anakanire’s admission would enhance her capacity to advise clients on international transactions, regulatory compliance, privacy frameworks and other cross-border legal issues.

Agbomoagan added that international qualifications not only promote professional development but also deepen legal cooperation among jurisdictions and create opportunities for knowledge exchange between Nigeria and other parts of the world. He further noted that Anakanire’s interests in artificial intelligence governance and data privacy position her at the forefront of emerging areas shaping the future of legal practice.
