The United Nigerian Americans Council in Maryland has intensified calls for Nigerians living in the United States to participate actively in the American political process.
The leader of the organisation, Dr Chris Ademiluyi, said the council was established to encourage Nigerians in the diaspora to register as voters, take part in elections and seek elective positions in the United States.
Ademiluyi disclosed this in a statement made available to Diaspora Tales on Friday, stressing the need for stronger political representation of Nigerians within the American system.
According to her, the organisation, founded in 2019, has continued to focus on political awareness, empowerment and community mobilisation among Nigerian-Americans.
“Our vision and dedication continue to guide the organisation’s efforts in advocating greater political participation and representation in Maryland,” she said.
She explained that the council was committed to building awareness and support within the Nigerian-American community to increase civic engagement and political influence.
Ademiluyi added that the group aims to raise the number of politically active voters capable of shaping policy decisions and influencing electoral outcomes in their communities.
She also noted that while many members may not support direct financial donations to politicians, they strongly believe in the power of the ballot as a means of supporting candidates and impacting governance.
“The organisation promotes and acknowledges the unique perspective of its members. While they may not believe in making direct financial contributions to politicians, their votes are viewed as a powerful form of support,” she stated.
The call comes amid growing conversations around increased political participation by African and immigrant communities across the United States.
