A second Nigerian national has been charged with murder in connection with the death of Taiwo Ekerin following an alleged assault in Lewisham, London.
The UK Metropolitan Police disclosed on Tuesday that Chibueze Chukwurah, 34, was arrested and charged after investigations into the incident that resulted in Ekerin’s death.
According to the police, officers responded to reports of a disturbance on Lewisham High Street at about 4:40 a.m. on May 24 and found a 41-year-old man with severe head injuries.
The victim received emergency treatment at the scene from paramedics before being taken to hospital for further medical attention.
Police said the injured man later died in hospital on May 30, prompting a murder investigation.
Chukwurah, a resident of Royston Road, Glasgow, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of murder. He appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was remanded in custody.
The defendant is expected to appear before the Old Bailey on Wednesday for the next stage of the proceedings.
The development comes after another Nigerian, Maxwell Oguanaya, was previously charged in connection with the same case and remanded in custody pending further court proceedings.
