President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the newly inaugurated Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham, expressing confidence that Nigeria and the UK will strengthen their long-standing diplomatic and strategic relationship under his administration.
The President also commended the British government and its citizens for what he described as a peaceful, orderly and seamless transition of power, noting that the process reflects the resilience of the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.
Tinubu’s message was conveyed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to the statement, the President recalled his engagement with former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his official visit to the United Kingdom in March 2026, expressing optimism that Burnham would build on the gains recorded during that visit.
Tinubu said he was eager to expand cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom across areas of mutual interest.
“I look forward to exploring new opportunities for partnership, collaboration and cooperation with the United Kingdom under the leadership of the new Prime Minister,” the President said.
He also expressed his readiness to meet Burnham at the earliest opportunity, both through bilateral engagements and multilateral platforms, including the Commonwealth, with a view to deepening ties between the two countries.
The President added that he remained committed to strengthening the strategic partnership between Nigeria and the UK in ways that would deliver mutual benefits to both nations and their citizens.
The Federal Government also wished Burnham a successful tenure in office and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with his administration to advance shared priorities and tackle common global challenges.
