Nigerian doctor sets record in U.S, wins all residency program awards

A Nigerian-born medical doctor, Dr. Timileyin Oluseyi, has made history in the United States by clinching all eight top awards at his residency graduation, a feat that has resonated with pride among Nigerians and the broader Black community.

Dr. Oluseyi’s extraordinary performance marked the first time in the institution’s history that a single resident has swept all available honors, which recognize excellence across various categories, including clinical skills, leadership, research, and compassionate patient care.

In addition to his academic and professional distinction, Dr. Oluseyi also broke racial barriers by becoming the first Black resident to achieve such a milestone.

Reports indicate that he outperformed all his peers across every measurable metric within the program.

A viral video from the graduation ceremony captured an emotional and culturally significant moment, as the program’s director and departmental chairman honored Dr. Oluseyi by prostrating before him, a traditional Yoruba gesture that signifies profound respect.

The gesture was reportedly carried out after faculty members researched Yoruba customs in preparation for the event.

One faculty member was quoted as saying, “The chairman said, ‘We’ve never seen anything like this. He raised the bar for this program forever.’”
