Nigerian-American driver, Ugochukwu wins FIA formula 3 season opener in Melbourne

Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has begun the 2026 season on a strong note after claiming victory in the opening feature race of the FIA Formula 3 Championship held at Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia.

The 18-year-old driver, who races for Campos Racing, delivered a dominant performance during the season-opening race on Saturday, securing his first-ever Formula 3 win and taking an early lead in the drivers’ championship standings.

Starting from second position on the grid, Ugochukwu briefly dropped to third after the race began but quickly recovered, climbing back to second place by the second lap before executing a decisive overtaking move at Turn 9 to take the lead from teammate Théophile Naël.

Once in front, the young driver maintained control of the race, steadily extending his advantage and building a lead of nearly seven seconds during the 23-lap contest.

Although a late safety car period forced the race to conclude under yellow flags, Ugochukwu comfortably crossed the finish line in first place to claim the chequered flag and the top spot on the podium.

Reacting after the race, the teenager expressed satisfaction with his performance and credited his team for the victory.

He said, “It was a perfect start to the season. We were quick throughout the weekend. I dropped a little at the start but managed to fight back to the lead. From there I was able to build a gap until the safety car. I’m very happy and grateful to the team.”

The victory comes barely a month after Ugochukwu captured the Formula Regional Oceania Championship title in February, further underlining his rapid rise in global motorsport.

Following the Melbourne triumph, Ugochukwu now leads the FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship standings with 25 points, ahead of Freddie Slater and Bruno del Pino, who both have 18 points.

Born in New York City in 2007, Ugochukwu is the son of Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba and Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi. Although he competes under the American flag, the teenager maintains strong Nigerian roots as his success continues to draw attention from fans across the globe.
