A Nigerian man based in the United Kingdom, Kayode Ogunbodede, popularly known as Kay, has reportedly died in his sleep in Swansea, Wales.
The late Ogunbodede was said to have passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving behind his wife and two young daughters.
Details of the incident emerged through a fundraising appeal launched by Olatunde Owoeye-Phoster to support the deceased’s family following the sudden tragedy.
According to the appeal, Ogunbodede’s wife is currently a student and unemployed, while their daughters are aged six years and six months respectively.
Describing the deceased as a devoted family man and a respected member of the Nigerian community in the UK, Owoeye-Phoster said his death came as a painful shock to relatives, friends and church members.
“Our lives changed suddenly when Kayode Ogunbodede, fondly called Kay, passed away in his sleep on Tuesday morning in Swansea,” the statement read.
It added, “Kay was calm, cheerful, supportive and always willing to help others. He was deeply committed to his family and community.”
The appeal further noted that Ogunbodede was an active member of the Elim City Church in Swansea as well as the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
The fundraising campaign, according to the organisers, was created to assist the bereaved family with funeral expenses, childcare, living costs and the continuation of the wife’s education.
“Kay left behind a wife who is still studying and currently not working, alongside two young daughters. This has placed the family in an extremely difficult situation,” the statement added.
As of the time of filing this report, £480 had reportedly been raised from the £18,000 target set for the family’s support.
Ogunbodede’s death is one of several recent cases involving Nigerians in the UK whose families have turned to public donations for assistance after sudden losses.
In recent months, similar fundraising appeals were launched following the deaths of other Nigerians in the UK, including a father of three identified as Herbert and another Nigerian, Ademola Oke, who reportedly died at his workplace.
