The Federal Government has commenced the evacuation of Nigerians who wish to leave Iran, moving them across the Armenia border amid rising tensions in the region.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed the development in a statement shared on her X handle on Tuesday.
She explained that officials of the Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran are coordinating the evacuation process, ensuring that Nigerians willing to depart the country are safely escorted to the Armenian border.
According to her, the embassy staff are guiding the evacuees and facilitating their movement to ensure a safe and orderly passage out of Iran.
“The willing Nigerians in Iran are being safely escorted across the Armenia border by officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, ensuring smooth and secure passage for those wishing to leave,” she stated.
Dabiri-Erewa also assured that no Nigerian citizen in Iran has been harmed by the ongoing tensions so far, adding that embassy officials remain stationed at the border to assist those arriving from the evacuation route.
She noted that the exercise is being carried out in collaboration with Armenian authorities as part of the Federal Government’s measures to safeguard Nigerians abroad during emergencies.
The evacuation effort, she added, reflects the government’s continued monitoring of developments in the Middle East and its commitment to protecting the welfare of citizens living overseas.
