Nigerians not under siege in South Africa, envoy assures

Nigeria’s Acting Ambassador to South Africa, Temitope Ajayi, has assured that Nigerians residing in the country remain safe despite recent xenophobic tensions, stating that the situation is under control.

Ajayi gave the assurance on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief programme, noting that both Nigerian and South African authorities are working closely to maintain peace and security.

He stressed that there is no coordinated attack targeting Nigerians, describing recent incidents as isolated.

“Currently, Nigerians are not under siege in South Africa. The situation is under control, and both governments are working to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents, including foreigners,” he said.

The envoy’s remarks followed reports of anti-foreigner protests and sporadic violence in parts of South Africa, including Durban, Cape Town and East London, where some foreign-owned businesses were reportedly attacked.

He, however, cautioned that the developments should not be interpreted as widespread hostility against Nigerians.

“What we have seen are isolated tensions that require caution. There is no direct or organised attack on Nigerians at this time,” Ajayi added.

Speaking from Pretoria, the ambassador said the city and other major centres, including Johannesburg, remain calm, noting that earlier disturbances in KwaZulu-Natal had been contained following swift government intervention.

He also dismissed viral social media footage allegedly showing foreigners being denied access to a building, describing those involved as unrepresentative of the broader South African population.

According to him, Nigerian authorities have continued to issue advisories urging citizens to remain law-abiding, exercise restraint, and observe local regulations.

The Federal Government, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, had earlier advised Nigerians in the country to stay vigilant, limit movements where necessary, and temporarily shut down businesses in affected areas.

Ajayi reiterated that ongoing collaboration between both countries remains focused on preventing escalation and ensuring the safety of all residents.
