The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerian travellers against visa overstays, warning that such violations could have wider implications for future applicants.
In a statement issued on Monday via its official X handle, the mission emphasised the importance of adhering strictly to U.S. immigration regulations to preserve fair access for legitimate travellers.
According to the advisory, failure to comply with visa conditions, including overstaying approved durations, may affect how applications from Nigerians are assessed in the future.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens. Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly,” the mission stated.
The mission noted that thousands of Nigerians travel annually to the United States for education, business, tourism and family visits, urging them to respect the terms of their visas throughout their stay.
It also raised concerns over cases of visa fraud and misuse of travel documents, describing them as serious offences that undermine the integrity of the immigration system.
The mission encouraged members of the public with credible information on visa fraud to report through designated consular fraud prevention channels.
Reaffirming its position, the mission stated its commitment to promoting safe, legal and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States, while ensuring that compliant travellers are not disadvantaged by the actions of others.
