NIS warns Nigerians against illegal migration, fake overseas job offers

The Nigeria Immigration Service has cautioned Nigerians against travelling abroad through illegal routes or without valid immigration documents, warning that such actions violate the law and expose travellers to exploitation and other dangers.

In a public advisory shared on its official X handle on Monday, the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi, stressed that all international travel must be undertaken with valid passports, visas where applicable, and other approved travel documents.

The agency warned that attempts to evade official immigration procedures or use unauthorised border routes amount to breaches of Nigerian immigration laws.

The NIS also expressed concern over the increasing activities of fraudulent migration syndicates allegedly deceiving unsuspecting Nigerians with fake promises of jobs, education opportunities and improved living conditions abroad.

According to the service, many victims of such schemes eventually become exposed to human trafficking, forced labour and other forms of exploitation.

“These schemes often result in forced labour, human trafficking and other forms of exploitation,” the statement read.

The immigration agency further noted that no legitimate travel process bypasses official border posts or recognised immigration procedures.

It urged Nigerians, particularly young people seeking opportunities overseas, to verify travel and recruitment offers through appropriate government channels before making commitments.

The NIS also advised members of the public to avoid dealing with unregistered travel agents and individuals promoting irregular migration.

Citizens were encouraged to report suspicious migration activities or fraudulent recruitment schemes to the nearest immigration office or relevant security agencies.

Reaffirming its commitment to border security, the service stated that it remained determined to protect Nigerians from illegal migration networks and other transnational crimes.
