Onwurah, Idaminabo, Smade Shine as Afriball debuts in UK with lifetime achievement awards

The push to elevate African excellence within the global diaspora received a major boost at the maiden edition of AFRIBALL held in the United Kingdom, where UK Member of Parliament, Dame Chi Onwurah, international entrepreneur, Dr Rex Tonye Idaminabo, and entertainment executive, Dr King Smade, were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The high-profile ceremony, themed “Culturally Loud,” took place at the historic Assembly Rooms in Newcastle upon Tyne and attracted a mix of policymakers, creatives, entrepreneurs and cultural influencers from across the world, all gathered to celebrate African achievement and identity.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of the AFRIBALL Lifetime Achievement Awards, which recognised the honourees for their enduring contributions to leadership, cultural advancement and community development across continents.

Delivering the keynote address, Dame Chi Onwurah reflected on the importance of representation and the need for Africans in the diaspora to take a more intentional role in shaping global narratives and future opportunities.

The Founder of Afriball, Teinye Boyle, used the occasion to call for deeper unity among Africans, urging a shift away from surface-level cultural debates towards building lasting structures that strengthen diaspora identity and collaboration.

Boyle argued that the conversation must evolve beyond symbolic rivalries and repetitive cultural comparisons, stressing that the focus should now be on collective progress and generational impact.

He said it was time for Africans to move past questions of “who came first” to “who is building next,” adding that true influence lies in what the diaspora is actively creating together.

The event also spotlighted digital innovation through its Creators Awards segment, hosted by media personality Reedah Yvonne, where online storytellers were recognised for their cultural influence following a public voting process.

Winners and honourees included popular digital creators Educomedy and Jossy Anne, alongside a new wave of emerging voices shaping contemporary African digital content across platforms.

Afriball also unveiled its 2026 Culture Shapers list, featuring individuals making significant contributions to African culture across global industries, with attendees drawn from different parts of the United Kingdom for the inaugural announcement.

The evening was jointly anchored by Daps, Sherryjane and Reedah Yvonne, and featured live performances from diaspora artists including Fred Chyke, Sturge, TMJ, Kansah, Cherrie D’Avino, Coldhell and Georgia May.

Organisers said the successful debut of Afriball marked the beginning of a new cultural institution aimed at projecting African narratives globally, celebrating excellence and inspiring future generations within the diaspora.
