NiDCOM confirms Nigerian injured in Qatar gas plant explosion recovering

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has confirmed that a Nigerian injured in last week’s explosion at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar, has been discharged from hospital and is recuperating.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the commission identified the injured worker as Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, saying he is recovering at accommodation provided by his employer after receiving medical treatment.

NiDCOM also commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for his prompt intervention and close monitoring of Abdulrahman’s condition following the industrial accident.

According to the commission, the explosion occurred at about 10:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, June 21, at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility operated by QatarEnergy in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

QatarEnergy had earlier attributed the explosion and the resulting fire to an operational accident during restart activities at the facility, ruling out sabotage or any hostile act. The company explained that the Barzan plant had been shut down since December 2025 for scheduled maintenance and resumed operations only two days before the incident.

Authorities in Qatar said 13 people lost their lives, while 66 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured included nationals of Nigeria, Qatar, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Nepal and several other countries. Officials, however, said none of the injured was in critical condition.

Reacting to Abdulrahman’s recovery, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed relief over his discharge from hospital and sympathised with other victims still undergoing treatment.

“We are pleased that Jubril Abdulrahman is recovering and receiving proper care. Our thoughts and prayers remain with him and with all those still receiving medical attention,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa also urged QatarEnergy to continue providing adequate medical care and welfare support to all workers affected by the explosion until they fully recover.

The commission further praised Ambassador Yakubu for his swift engagement with Qatari authorities and his commitment to ensuring the welfare of the injured Nigerian.

Emergency responders from QatarEnergy and the Qatar Civil Defence successfully contained the fire, while investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.

Authorities have maintained that the incident has not disrupted the country’s liquefied natural gas exports or operations at Ras Laffan Port, one of the world’s largest LNG processing and export hubs.
